    1. Hi Nick – sorry, but I know of no such programs. I know it’s scary because any search for such a thing will turn up multiple scientology-connected results.

I am not a mental health professional, but I have read quite a bit about the various difficulties people encounter with this sort of treatment. Your best bet is to consult with a qualified psychiatrist who is open to other methods of dealing with depression. Perhaps you can look for a psychiatrist who specializes in CBT/REBT or Choice Theory. You should keep in mind that detoxification from anti-depressants can increase suicidal feelings (ironically, use of certain anti-depressants can increase suicidal ideation as well), so be sure to find a qualified psychiatrist to consult with, and don’t attempt to stop the use of these powerful drugs without the proper medical advice and supervision.

      Good Luck,
      Steven

  2. My fiancé and I both had serious surgeries. She had a spine surgery, I had 4 shoulder surgeries. This lead to the use then abuse of painkillers. Not a crazy amount, but enough that we want to get out of this “prison” we created. We both tried the 12 step thing and we are not alcoholics, we just took too much medication that lead to needing them to feel normal and happy and right. That’s why I know there is a problem. I would like to keep this as confidential as we can. What do you recommend? We have both been to a 12 step for a month and it wasn’t up our alley and we don’t believe that you can’t have a beer if your not an alcoholic. We just need to get off the painkillers. Furthermore, my dad committed suicide so that was a trigger for Xanax and other benzos. How can we go about this without the month in a 12 step program that we thnk is BS. Those places are money makers! That’s all!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  3. Ok so I’m going into the land of controversy because I completely understand and agree with this site! Addiction is not a disease! Just read step one of the 12 steps: it states,
“We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable.”
Ok so yes I agree that my life was unmanageable when I was doing heroin daily. But what I completely 100 percent disagree with is that we were powerless!
If I was truly powerless then how did I use my “diseased” brain to CHOOSE to quit using and today with 19 days completely clean and sober still not want to use?!
If I had NO POWER over my addiction this wouldn’t be possible without some sort of medical or spiritual intervention! Yet all I’ve done is made up my mind to change my life around so yea there is absolutely zero proof that addiction is a brain disease! I’ve never heard of a disease that you can get rid of simply by choice and brain power!
Anyways I’m still thinking it’s risky to believe I’m suddenly cured. I believe I need to continue learning and furthering my experiences in life. And going to NA meetings daily is nice and all but it just seems so restrictive to me.
I’m wondering if anyone has any input or knowledge/experience with Ibogaine treatment? I’m willing to go to Canada and try this since it seems logical in my brain! No feedback about how it’s a “dangerous psychoactive drug” needed! If you believe psychedelic drugs are dangerous then you have obviously been brainwashed by the so called war on drugs..
But whatever I’ll take any constructive criticism if u got it!

  4. Try SMART Recovery meetings they are non 12 step CBT/REBT meeting group with a certified facilitator. CBT/REBT are the only treatment I have had success with.
