People change from the inside out – bottom line.  Whenever anyone achieves a substantial change in their life, it always starts and is maintained by a change at the level of thought.

Treatment programs ignore this basic fact of human existence.  And instead of teaching people how to take control at the level of thought, they teach them to rely on counselors, therapists, sponsors, meetings, medicine, the world, and other external circumstances and conditions for change.  They teach people that they can’t control themselves, so it’s not even worth trying.  The results of this approach are horrific – people cycle in and out of rehabs and 12-step groups, while never putting together long term success.

There is a better approach.

Cognitive Behavioral Education (CBE), teaches people how to change – at the level of thought.  It involves no meetings, no therapy, no aftercare, no medical treatment for an imaginary disease.  It’s simply an educational course -a set of classes based on a unique but intuitive philosophy, and proven to work through 22 years of research and practice.

The philosophy is simple: all behavior is freely chosen as a means to find happiness.  You don’t need to feel guilty, you don’t need to find god, and you don’t need to feel powerless and diseased.  You just need to recognize that you’re in control, explore your options for happiness, and then you’ll find yourself quite naturally moving away from problematic levels of substance use.

CBE teaches people how to use their thoughts to change their lives.  It doesn’t judge, it doesn’t tell you what to think, and it doesn’t label.  It just teaches you principles and offers cognitive behavioral exercises that allow you the opportunity to analyze your own problems, draw a line in the sand, and move past them forever.  It teaches people to move beyond reactivity and letting themselves be pushed around by circumstance, and shows them how to move towards proactive living – rebuilding the life that they want.

I’ve done the research.  I’ve failed in the conventional programs.  I found success with CBE a decade ago.  It works – where everything else fails.  So I’m proud to once again be teaching this revolutionary program offered by The Saint Jude Retreats.  I’m now teaching CBE to anyone, anywhere in the world online via Skype – and face to face in my NYC office.  I’d love to hear from you, listen to your story, and show you how CBE can help.

We have friendly family consultants answering phones all day long, and they’re willing to answer any and all questions.  We can’t wait to help you solve your substance use problem once and for all.

Steven Slate has helped hundreds of people to overcome their addictions privately as a coach, in partnership with Stanton Peele Ph.D., and through his work as lead instructor and director of The Saint Jude Retreat, where he also trained many new CBE instructors.  He’s the author of The Clean Slate Addiction site, a blog about alternative views of addiction and recovery.  He understands the problems of the conventional recovery culture well – having spent 5 years in and out of various treatment programs for his own addiction, before finally solving his problem with a non-disease choice based approach a decade ago.  Steven studied  coaching at New York University and The Albert Ellis Institute, and is a Certified CBE Instructor.
